Spray Painting Glass Tutorial

It has taken me a few tries to figure out how to spray paint glass.
I have had a few projects that failed because I didn't spray the glass right.

Today, I want to share my knowledge of what I have learned about spray painting glass correctly incase any of you have had problems as well or are thinking about upcoming projects.

For this tutorial I am spray painting candle stick holders that I did for a project HERE.

To start I just went ahead and started spraying them with normal spray paint, nothing special. I held the can according to the directions on it. This one was 8-10 in. away from the object. I have done research before and some sites said to sand the glass a little bit, to roughen it up so the paint has something to stick to but I found that it really wasn't necessary for my projects.

The TRICK with glass is SLOW & STEADY with LIGHT COATS.
The picture above only has 1 coat of paint on it. You can still see through the glass. In between each coat I wait a good few minutes for it to fully dry. I end up having to put about 5-6 light coats on it to get the full coverage that it needs. It is a slow process, but the outcome is beautiful!!

This one has 6 coats of paint on it.

With my past projects that didn't go so well I put the paint on too heavy and too quickly. As it started drying it got a cracking and bubbling look. It was horrible. So it really needs to be light coats and put on slow.

This is another project that I spray painted candle stick holders as well:
This is one of the projects that I had one that failed. I had to go back and buy another candle stick to get it right!!

  4. I had no idea you could spray paint glass. In fact, when I read your post heading, I immediately pictured paint dripping off the glass or see through spots. I was wrong though, because they look fantastic! Thanks for sharing! I am definitely trying this. :-)

  6. My problem is that I think if it is spray paint that it should be faster. LOL I don't have the patience. These are great tips though. Next time I attempt a spray paint project, I'm using these! Thanks for sharing at the Pomp Party!

  7. Hi, Jill! Great tutorial! I found you on Create.Craft.Love's Pomp Party!

I have long wanted to try painting glass, but couldn't get it to come out right. Yours look great and I'm pinning it for reference. One question - have you tried using a primer first? I thought that might be a fix, too, but never got around to trying it. (Craft ADD sufferer here. LOL)

  10. I have candle holders that look very similar that I painted with Martha Stewart's glass paint. It's practically the same color as the ones you painted, but I'm betting your spray paint was a lot cheaper than her glass paint. Also, your coats look a lot more even. I'll have to try this next time.

    1. I am sure it was cheaper then her paint. I am not sure how much, but I just got my spray paint from Home Depot. Hope these tips help you on the next project!! Thanks for stopping by!

  11. Thanks for the tips I have just recently spray painted the same candle stick (I got mine from the Dollar Tree) and it did not turn out so great. I was to rushy and did not do light coats mine were a tad heavier. I was making displays for my Paparazzi Jewelry.

    1. You can totally ask me as many questions as you would like to!! I know I downloaded the button from somewhere, but I can't remember. It was along time ago I put it on there. If you would give me your email address or email me at 2yellowbirdsdecor@gmail.com I can send it over to you, if you would like! I know I have it on my computer still.

To get it on my blog I went to layout {on the dashboard} then where your sidebar is I went to ad a gadget. I clicked on picture. Then I uploaded it and also added a link so it goes to lds.org when clicked on.
Hope that answers your question! Let me know if you have any others. I am glad to help!
